Update: clean oil fixed her. She isn’t acting up and I no longer have a christmas tree on my dashboard. I’ll be less of a dumb  ass moving forward.....hopefully.

I let time escape me and did not take care of my car. I don’t know what I was thinking but I was reminded today that I missed a normal oil change on my Subaru that is now 165K+.

How do I know I missed my oil change and why am I stupid? Well this is what you call a two-fer.

Kinja'd!!!

Half way home, entering the high way I gunned it to get up to speed with the heavy traffic. My engine sputtered a little and then my dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

Kinja'd!!!

The CDL is for error codes P0028 & P0026, which I was able to read thanks to my ODBII wifi sensor and DashCommand app.

Kinja'd!!!

After a quick search, the error is for the left and right intake valve control solenoid; where the most common theme on the cause for the error is low oil and/or going to long between oil changes. I normally stay within the 5-6k window on synthetic, but this time I done f****d up because I couldn’t change it myself.

My wife kindly took it for a change. Upon return I noticed it said 3k; or norms oil. This is 100% not her fault because I would have screwed up anyways. The service due was 160k; meaning if I was on synthetic I would have been pushing almost 2,500-3,500 over my normal usage. Yes, I know synthetic can typically go 10k, but with an older engine I like to baby it so I don’t have these issues.... seems I’m going to now.

Let’s hope this doesn’t penalize me in the future and this can be fixed with an oil change. I’ll update tomorrow. Cheers!

Late side note: my tire pressure is actually good, but the sensors died around 120k miles and I didn’t find value shelling out the $20 or whatever is to fix it because I check my tires every 4/5th fuel up anyways; 1,600-2000miles.

What’s the Subaru? Mine says 6k in the book but was later officially shortened to every 3k even with full synthetic due to the risk of turbo clogging and so the inevitable oil consumption of a turbo boxer doesn’t lead to oil starvation.

2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i; I was going off what the Mobile One said (10k); but apparently I was wrong because it says 15k haha. I don’t have a turbo. I was way too worried about the issues they have post 100k miles and the fact the gas mileage was much lower. This is basically my commuter car, since I drop 100+ miles a day on the car.

The late oil change did not cause any of your problems

You’d need new head gaskets even if you changed your oil every 2k :p

har har; no turbo here :P

The turbo motors aren’t that bad over 100k. The timing belt, water pump, and head gaskets are an issue regardless of whether it has a turbo or not, the turbo itself will of course eventually wear out and need to be replaced, but that’s true of all turbo cars, and the burnt valves/injector failure issues can be prevented with a richer tune (they’re tuned lean from the factory). I know there’s the whole ringlands thing, and while that’s certainly a risk it’s not as common as the internet makes it out to be. Mine is at 202k, I’ve had to replace the injectors and the turbo once, but that’s the only engine work I’ve had to do aside from the standard plugs and coils (and a ripped inlet hose) . I did also change the oil pickup as a preventative measure because on the Outback that does sometimes crack.

That’s totally fair. It was more of, I travel a lot and don’t want to add one more point of fault if I don’t need to. Add in the fact it would be all around a much expensive car to maintain in terms of fuel/travel costs.

I feel you. The fuel costs are definitely a bit of a killer

Ehh, rolling an extra 5k miles on your oil shouldn’t harm anything. Even modern conventional oil (API SN rating) will easily last 10k miles between changes without sludging issues.

All sensors are off! I think it just got a little clogged but worked itself out with clean synthetic.

I dream of a wrx though. They have become gorgeous; although bugeyes are still my favorite. One day I’ll have enough money... haha

IIRC my 2002 Impreza with the 2.5L was very sensitive to having fresh oil. I did changes at 3000 -3500 religiously. My newer 2013 Outback is pretty good to 3000 then starts burning. I’ve switched to 5000 mile intervals.

I could have read your story wrong, but did you say sensors lit up because oil was low? Does it burn oil? I know some engines consider it normal to burn 8 billion barrels of oil between oil changes. By the way, fuck those engines.

Not as dumb as me at least...I ruined the transmission in my truck. $3k down the drain :(

I’ve pretty much always had manual transmissions...my truck is auto. I knew you had to have the truck running to check the oil level, well apparently you need to actually drive it and get it up to temp before checking the oil level. I drained some oil since it showed high when it was cold and had been just started. I stopped driving as soon as it started shifting weird but the damage was already done.

Yea, I’ve never had a problem ever so it was a bit of a shock. I wasn’t too worried because when ever the cruise light flashing comes on with the CEL; it’s never a big deal. At least from my experience.

It could have been due to low oil (wasn’t the case for me), but in all the nasioc forums people would blame the issue on low oil. My car doesn’t really burn oil beyond normal. My guess is the dirty oil set off a sensor. I am going to clean the sensor as well. I was off in the mud this weekend which may have kicked up dust or something and triggered this whole thing.

Why do you hate these engines? It is kind of a pain to operate due to location of things, but it’s reliability has been next to none for me.

Oh jesus. I did not know this; nor did I know you could kill a transmission that way.  Sorry to hear about your truck and your wallet.

Own Chrysler transmissions once:

Go over the 30k fluid/filter interval, your trans will live a short life.

Use the wrong fluid, your trans will live a short life.

Use the wrong filter, your trans will live a short life.

Drive it too nicely, your trans will live a short life.

Drive them hard, maintain them properly (ATF+4, Mopar Filter 15-30k intervals), and they will easily take 200k of piss-pounding.

no. not your engine... an engine that has oil burning built in.

My sister had a corolla that went bone dry in like a week. no leaks. just “normal” oil burning according to toyota...... after arguing with them they admitted that the engine was perhaps burning more than it should and a new engine would cost more than a car.
